The next phase of the LHR Eastern Balancing Reservoir Surge Vessel works is underway. Having established a temporary Surge Vessel and the temporary bypass pipework, the de-commissioning of the old 10 metre long, 3 metre diameter Surge Vessel weighing 19 tonnes can be completed.
This involves the removal of the wall to the pump house and pulling the Surge Vessel out on skates, before cutting it into three separate parts that can be lifted off and removed from the site. The challenge here is greater than normal: space for removal is very limited, thanks to a live HV substation immediately adjacent. That’s why we have to cut the Vessel up.
Once the Surge Vessel is completely removed, new manifold pipework and motorised valves are to be installed, ready for the new permanent Surge Vessels to be commissioned.
